Blog Post Keyword Selection

Should I focus on one keyword per article/blog post or multiple keywords?
For some reason the question of single keywords or keyword phrases versus multiple keywords per blog post or page has been raised a lot lately. From what I can tell, they both have their place in the development of any keyword strategy. It never ceases to amaze me at how many random key phrases my sites get rankings for. Sometimes they are the keywords I am focusing on and sometimes they aren’t. From my perspective, I think you should choose one keyword or key phrase to focus on per article. Whatever keyword you are focusing on should be duplicated in you blog title (in some form) and should be used throughout your content. But, this doesn’t mean you can’t add additional keywords and/or phrases related to your article’s title as well. By adding additional keyword variables to your site you will have a better chance of ranking for multiple key phrases. However, it has been my experience that these secondary key phrases do not compete as articles main keyword. For example I did some wedding keyword research on anther one of my sites and titled a blog post Popular Wedding Keywords. This particular phrase ranks number one in Google when the term Popular Wedding Keywords is searched (at least at the time of writing this article). That was the key phrase I concentrated on, thus the title. But, the page also ranks in the top 10 for the phrase Wedding Keywords. Thus secondary keywords can play a role in driving traffic to your site but your main focus should probably still be centered on the main term (title) of your post or article.

I do believe that there are a variety of factors which weigh a particular sites value. Consider website weight or rankings and answer the following question. If a prominent blog like Gizmodo and a random, lower page rank blog were to post identical articles at precisely the same time and were screened at exactly the same time, whose blog post would rank higher? I’d love to hear your answers so feel free to provide some feedback on this question!
